Baggrund

The maritime industry is one of the world's biggest contributors to carbon emissions. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) set a greenhouse gas reduction strategy in 2018, for shipowners to reduce their carbon intensity by 40% by 2030, compared to 2008. In addition, two more regulations - CII and EEXI - will enter into force in 2023.

Despite the growing concern for reducing carbon emissions, there are currently limited tools available to aid in the process. These tools mainly focus on providing short-term solutions for individual vessels within a company, without long-term planning and alignment with global decarbonisation efforts. Furthermore, there is a lack of transparency in comparing the efforts made by different fleets and shipowners, as there is no standard metric to measure their progress towards a greener future.

Previously, users navigated spreadsheets to plan, forecast, and update their vessels' emissions data. This was restricted to select expert users and was not easily shared with other stakeholders. The shipping companies lacked an effective tool to handle high data volumes and complexity to track emissions across the fleet and meet sustainability goals.

"With 80 vessels operating worldwide, we needed an effective digital tool to handle high data volumes and complexity to track emissions across our fleet and determine the initiatives we need to achieve to meet our goal to cut emissions by 50% within 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050,” says Tor Inge Dale, Chief Sustainability Officer at Solstad Offshore.

VPS - leading maritime fuel and decarbonisation service provider - saw an opportunity for a digital tool to make it easier for shipping companies to track and plan their emissions reductions in line with their own green goals, increasing regulatory pressure and the growing competitive market.

Løsning

Core is an emissions tracking software that enables shipowners to monitor, forecast, and plan emission reducing initiatives of their fleets in order to reduce their carbon emissions and meet their company and industry targets. It is designed to meet the complex needs in the maritime value chain providing valuable insights, data and transparency to all relevant stakeholders.

Users onboarded to the digital platform are immediately provided an overview of their fleet's total carbon emission reduction efforts and how individual vessels are performing or underperforming. New vessels can be added into the software with a simple click, and by entering the IMO number (unique number of the ship), whereby relevant data about the vessel is automatically retrieved. On individual vessels the user is able to add and adjust different measures, such as changes in vessel speed, maintenance operations, route, or fuel usage that impact its carbon emissions. These measures are selected from a library designed to make it easier for the user to add new measures without any manual work, while immediately seeing the estimated effect over time and its cost compared to the IMO goal. This way relevant stakeholders can work efficiently to make optimal sustainable and financial decisions to reach their goals.

The tool's intuitive interface, clear visualisations, and immediate feedback are huge improvements to the previous way of working with spreadsheets for these calculations. Core makes it easier for shipping owners to work proactively and take long-term actions to meet their decarbonisation goals. It offers a more collaborative approach, where little training is required, compared to when measures were highly people-dependent and static.

To increase industry transparency and the push to work sustainably, the “CoreScore” was created to easily compare the decarbonisation efforts, not only for vessels within a company’s fleet, but also against the efforts of other fleets. With a calculation between 0 to 100 it aims to give a reliable and standardised score on how a company works towards the IMO goal. The score enables vessel owners to compare their efforts and ensure they are aligned with the industry standards, internally, globally and between companies, using the same standardised scoring system.

EGGS, in close collaboration with VPS and end-users, designed and built Core from scratch, including the tool’s visual identity and logo.

Resultat

Core was launched in September 2022, and has since onboarded four leading vessel owners including Solstad Offshore, DOF, Siem Offshore and Havila, with a total of approximately 160 vessels in the system. With these leading vessel owners adopting the tool, the potential for driving the maritime sector toward the green transition is accelerated. Using a digital tool with a user-friendly interface, shipping owners can use vast amounts of existing data to forecast their emission reduction more effectively and collaboratively. This was not possible with the manual spreadsheets previously used.

“Core enables us to plot a course and plan ahead for emissions reduction as we take the lead on this digital journey together with key technology suppliers such as Yxney Maritime (now part of VPS).” - Tor Inge Dale, Chief Sustainability Officer at Solstad Offshore.

The companies can now estimate long-term carbon emission reduction and work more proactively across their entire fleet, compared to before when the few tools on the market were more reactive and focused on adjustments of single vessels. Furthermore, the CoreScore of the company allows for relative ranking of companies’ efforts to reduce their emissions, and as such holds the potential to be the main metric on emissions integrity and trustworthiness.

"The CoreScore provides a reliable metric to assess the integrity and trustworthiness of our emissions performance" – Jon August Houge, ESG Director at Siem Offshore.

The tool has been mentioned in several industry magazines and forums, such as Manifold Times, Smart Maritime Network, and Energy Northern Perspective, and has been nominated for the Innovation of the Year Award by Riviera Maritime Media, to be announced at the OSJ Conference in London 08-09 February 2023.

"Emission reduction is about to become an important business differentiator. EGGS has helped us design Core so that it meets the needs of a range of stakeholders in the maritime value chain working hard to reduce their company's emissions footprint." - Sindre Bornstein, CCO at VPS Decarbonisation.
