Imagine a world where machines could talk. Where they could tell you exactly what they need, when they need it, and how they can best assist you. This is no longer science fiction but reality, thanks to a groundbreaking collaboration between Trackunit and Halfspace, Part of Accenture.
In a world where the construction industry generates over $9.5 trillion annually but has only seen marginal productivity improvements since the 1950s, innovation is crucial. While other industries have undergone digital revolutions and achieved remarkable efficiency gains, the construction industry has somewhat stagnant—until now. From their headquarters in Denmark, Trackunit has spent 25 years bridging the gap between people and equipment. Today, they are a global leader, connecting more than 3 million construction machines and equipment, serving more than 5,000 customers, and harmonizing more than two billion data points daily across 120+ countries. Trackunit’s customers include some of the world’s largest machinery manufacturers, equipment rental companies, and general contractors.
Large challenges must be broken down into small, manageable pieces. The core of the problem was not a lack of data—Trackunit had already created one of the world’s most extensive data lake for construction machinery, amassing over two trillion data points on their data platform, Iris. The challenge was to humanise this vast amount of data: to transform cold numbers and graphs into meaningful insights and actionable steps. Even though machines generated billions of data points, years of experience were still required to interpret and act upon this information. No two job sites are the same, thousands of different machine types operate under varying conditions, and a lack of industry-wide standardization makes data interpretation even more complex. In an industry where 80% of a machine’s lifetime costs come from operations and downtime, and where the shortage of skilled labor is growing by the day, a groundbreaking new approach was needed.
In collaboration with Halfspace, Trackunit has developed Trackunit Luna, a pioneering AI solution that fundamentally changes how machine data is analysed and generate unique insights. Through a combination of IoT equipement data, industry data, and advanced AI, they have created a solution that acts as a “digital assistant” for each customer’s connected equipment, site and fleet.
At the core of the solution is an intelligent agent system that functions as a digital fleet manager. These AI agents can:
• Enable users to query their machines’ performance using natural language
• Provide real-time insights and recommendations
• Aid predicting and scheduling maintenance
• Help optimising machine placement across depots
• Accelerate decision-making regarding service and utilisation
• Integrate with third-party systems to create seamless workflows
The solution democratises access to advanced data analytics by presenting complex insights in a humanly understandable manner, allowing a broad range of users to make better decisions—faster.
“Our collaboration with Halfspace has not only revolutionised the way we work with data; it has sparked a paradigm shift in how the entire construction industry can work smarter. With Trackunit Luna, we have not only improved efficiency but also laid the foundation for a more productive, safer, and more sustainable construction industry,” says Søren Brogaard, CEO at Trackunit.
Trackunit Luna minimises downtime by ensuring faster and better decision-making, that can lead to an improvement in fleet utilisation rates of up to 10%—a gain that directly impacts the bottom line. This is not just a benefit for individual companies but for the entire industry, which has struggled with low productivity and inefficiency for decades.
The results speak for themselves:
• Insights from Trackunit Luna can reduce downtime by up to 10% and can increase machine productivity, equivalent to more than $1 million annually for a typical Trackunit customer
• Insights can be obtained more than 30 times faster than before - shifting from hours to seconds
• Trackunit Luna can automate up to 20% of decisions and tasks for fleet managers, freeing up employee hours in the 1000s across the workforce, allowing workers to focus on more critical decisions and tasks
Additional benefits include greater employee autonomy, the democratisation of industry knowledge, reduced friction between departments, and, most importantly, increased customer satisfaction due to improved service and performance across the value chain.
By making complex data streams insightful and actionable through AI, Trackunit has created a solution that not only optimises the management of entire fleets but has the potential to fundamentally enhance the way humans can interact with equipment.
